Ghost Ghost

My Button Collection

As long as women have to act like men at work, employees will prefer men to women. And as long as there are so few women in power at work, women will have to act like men. Do we sound like a broken record?

Equality Myth: Come On, Do Men Really Make Better Bosses?

on a slightly related note- i am so SO against women’s “professional wear” that it makes me enraged if i think about it too much. i also believe it reinforces biases. why the hell do women have to wear uncomfortable pointy, heeled-whatever shoes and extremely restrictive “power suits” and pencil skirts? what the fuck is that? i can’t feel safe walking in a pencil skirt OR heels- what if there was an emergency? what if i had to run?

trying to dress in professional attire is one of the most stressful things i’ve ever tried to do, the few times i’ve had to. the outfits and button downs are fitted, obviously, but that makes for extremely constrictive clothing. i can’t code or make shit or sit on a couch and draw some awesome sketches in pantyhose and heels, yanno? and don’t even get me started on HEELS. most evil fucking thing on this planet.

summary: don’t treat yourself like a sex object if you’re going to work. work towards being an aggressive and strong human, not a “professional male”. you don’t need heels, foundation and a blazer to be taken seriously, and if you do- you should probably hit the books again or build up your skillset.

do men wear makeup to work? fuck that. do men stress about their outfit, stuff their feet in tiny pointed shoes or have to buy special underwear that doesn’t show through the flimsy skirts they have to wear? no, they’d fucking revolt if they had to put up with that kind of shit.

as always i agree with 95% of what you say nik. just need to throw my two cents in the mix.

maybe i’ve worked in corporate businesses for far too long in my fairly young life to make me a brainwashed drone but i’m a firm believer in dressing to impress and dressing for self confidence. i put on my black pencil skirt and my classy yet slightly revealing top and i’m ready to sell some overpriced maternity clothes that no woman needs.

at the same time i agree that their is an extremely unfair bias in career clothing. men can roll out of bed slap on some ill-fitting khakis, tuck their over-sized wrinkly jc penny button down in and if there’s a meeting today put on their generic holiday themed tie to pull the ensemble together. while women have to hunt high and low for fitted slacks that aren’t ultra low rise exposing themselves or ultra high to create an extra support system for their chest. i don’t even need to go into the fact that there aren’t enough cuts of pants to accommodate the endless shapes and sizes of women. button down shirts? are you kidding me? women have these two bumps on their chests called breasts and whether you’re an A cup or D cup you’re going to get that little opening by the buttons causing every guy to think they’re slick enough to take a peek without you noticing. hey guys, you’re not slick. i know you hate heels nik but some of us don’t. personally i love heels but not when i’m walking around work, standing on my feet all day, and then commuting home. forget finding pants that fit, finding heels that fit and don’t hurt your feet is like an act of god and even then you can’t afford them. so men, stop bitching about the money girls spend on their shoes. you walk around in a cheap pair of high heels for ten minutes and tell me how you like it. as far as work appropriate undergarments, put me in a pair of stockings and i will make you want to spend the day at a sorority house of hungover girls all simultaneously on their period, watching the notebook, and fighting over the last pint of peanut buttercup ben and jerry’s ice cream over being around me for five minutes.

there’s absolutely nothing wrong with dressing well for work. there is something wrong with the fact that men don’t have to dress well while women do.

p.s. please, please, please burn all of your khaki pants men and invest in black, brown, navy, or grey pants. no one should wear khaki pants. no one.
